A well-preserved 1989 RUF CTR “Yellowbird” was recently sold for a “record-breaking” $6,055,000 at the Gooding & Company Island Auction, highlighting the gradual sacred relic that this legendary German high-performance car has become a dream for collectors.
This RUF CTR “Yellowbird” is one of the only 29 vehicles produced in the world. It is painted with a unique Blutengelb (Burb Yellow) and is equipped with a rare Leichtbau (lightweight) specification, equipped with an aluminum body panel, a Matter aluminum roll cage and an optional six-speed RUF gearbox. Because the car is in excellent condition, it has a mileage of less than 1,056 miles since its departure, which has also led to a high auction price.
In 1987, the RUF CTR attracted global attention for the first time. It was hailed as the fastest mass-produced car in the world with a maximum speed of 211 mph in the performance test of Road & Track magazine. Nicknamed “Yellow Bird” for its bright yellow body and the sharp whistling sound of twin-turbo horizontal six-cylinder engines. CTR has become a classic work, and its image is immortalized through RUF's famous “Faszination auf dem Nürburgring” video and countless video games.
RUF company heads Alois and Estonia Ruf said the record-breaking auction fully demonstrated the enduring charm of CTR. With its outstanding performance, rarity and historical significance, the RUF CTR Yellowbird will continue to consolidate its position as one of the most respected models in history.
