My dad loved to play chess, and he tried to teach it to me when I was young. I was initially intrigued by it. The game pieces were stark, black and white, not goofy mid-century primary colors like other board game pieces of that era were. I could tell they were quality. They were hard plastic without seams, and solid and heavy. I really wanted to learn how to play—if only for the aesthetic love of the pieces, but I couldn’t. I had absolutely no aptitude for it. And I started to hate it. I tried to play it a few times with my dad at his behest, but I really sucked at it. I really did not understand the game, and I had no interest in understanding it. I think you have to have a certain mindset to like chess, and I am not of that mind.
Looks like me in the 7th image, but I didn’t have googly round black glasses like that in the early 70s! Couldn’t get a good likeness of my dad, though, but that’s ok. You really don’t need to see one.
